This topic was brought up by Mr. Vash and I don't want to fill a non-matching thread too much with informations - plus it's something that could be intresting for more persons from here, so yeah, here we go.
I'm gonna start with the series: The series seems to be a solid SyFy build. We have humans, 8 different kinds of aliens, a post-apocalyptic and changed earth and lot of thrash surrounding the earth, the former ships from the aliens, that from time to time crash on earth. This should cover the basics.
The game (am copying my statement from the other thread): Well, Defiance is pretty solid to be honest. Optical is it maybe just upper average, but gameplay wise is there not much to complain. It's a TPS MMO made by Trion (they did Rift) and based on this fact are the random events appearing becoming automatically harder (more life for everything) as more players are around and such things. Rounds of Co-Op or competitive MP are started right from the game and you are free to explore/do the quests by your own or team up with other players. Lots of different challenges to do with increasing difficulty, rewarding new clothings and increasing your "EGO"-rank (basicly your level) and so on. No need to pay money for their currency since the game itselfs is giving you enough good stuff.
Both parts by themselfs are pretty solid - but the point that was brought up by Mr. Vash was the connection between both, which is something they advertised as unique before.
So here we go (99,5% spoiler free - unless you think that "object" is a spoiler, or refering on something that is background story for both): The story of the both main characters of the series started inside the game, cause the game was released earlier. There were a few missions available were you helped them obtain an object. The series basicly starts at the point these missions ended and *drumroll* they had use for this object pretty early in the first episode. This was the first "hey, I know what this is" moment. Later in the first episode was there also a town were people celebrated the 15th anniversary of *thinks* wonder what kind of word would be the correct one.. well... I'm going with peace between humans and aliens. <-- this was also added in the game by random events were you need to protect celebrating people against the hostile stuff in the world.
And that's it so far. The game is new, the series just started, and these are the spoiler free connections between both by now. Also, judging by the end of the first episode, am I not expecting more things to reach the game due to this connection - so I guess that with future episodes will be more possible connections appear. But right now are these connections pretty minor and it's possible to play only the game or watch only the series without needing the other part to understand the things.
However, it could change in the future.

Nice going jjos, I did not realise you were into defiance. I'm wondering if there are any major differences between the console and pc versions.
I think, with a friend or two it could be a very eventful play, apparently the <raid thing that happens> i've heard is rather fun fighting alongside others with good rewards/rep etc. though I would sort of worry about the longevity of server play/popularity, that being said, Rift did do well mechanics wise I've read.
Think if i can get a couple of passes for a decent price in future on steam I'd give it a play with a mmo shooter friend, also tempted to give the 1st episode of the series a watch.

I played the beta due to PS+ and thought that the game was solid and okay. After the release had I waited a few days and then decided to actually buy it. And as said, it's quite fun.
However, servers are still experiencing problems. Even so the critical errors with connection looses on PS3 reduced have I stumbled upon increasind bugs within the big "raid" events, that these doesn't end even after finished, not giving rewards. And my friend told me, that on PC it's even worser with the problems on the server. So it might be a good idea to wait til they sort them out.
But the game is fun at all. Most likely more with friends (am playing solo all the time, expect for the raids, MP and other random meets). Looking forward to more new content related to the series and other content (DLC like).

2nd episode from Defiance was okay - but I see no way they are able to create any connection to the game.
The story from the series is too far offtrack then the one in the game. And San Francisco/St. Louis doesn't really match as well. Wonder how they want to get the connection back in the future.

Played some of the free weekend, I quite liked it! spent many hours, did notice;
terrible character creation though, all the women have large jaws and odd eyes :s
Think you need a crew/friends though, seems like you can't progress on some missions without some help and didn't like the inventory, did sort of like the 'autobest weapon is chosen and equipped when picked up' aspect but then found out only applicable to the weapon at hand, so often I had either 2 sniper rifles or 2 rifles etc.
communication also seems very drowned out but no big deal.
No lag, but the AI is terrible and the spawning is a bit off xD

Well, I played most of the time all by myself - beside of the situations you randomly team up with other players (like arcfalls or if more are in the same open questarea at once). Plus, what I've heard, are some main story quests, for which you need to zone into special instances, all solo with no possibility to get help - even if the ones are on your group. But yeah, on the other side are some quests (or even random events) quite tough that you will struggle hard by yourself. With a fixed group of friends way better for sure.
Regarding the weapons: You won't find too much difference on them at all. Example: If you find an Assault Rifle named "Attackrifle" with level 100 (stuff you pick up will always have the level requirement you are actually at) will it be as strong as an "Attackrifle" I pick up with level 2600. The differences appear with the random bonuses that get added with increasing rarity of the weapons (white - green - blue - purple - orange). It's more about finding a weapon with useful bonuses for your playing style - and the skill level you have for that weapon category.
The connection between game and series is still pretty low, even so we got new episodic missions (6 quests) last week based on a character that "left" the series and then appeared in the area of the game.
And they are still working on bugfixes, balancing, tweaking and so on. We got a big patch last week containing lot of this stuff and preparations for upcomming cross-content, DLCs, a new MP mode and so on. They are on their way into the right direction - and I'm still playing my daily contracts and everything new they add from time to time. It's like a typical MMO: it surely does have problems at the start. Every MMO does. But they are working on them and have solved several issues already. Plus, never forget, they needed to rush the game out due to the connection to the series - so were problems just logical.

Yeh fair points, I did hear they did do a rush job for the tv series connection.
Think I was bit frustrated with all the weaps, the "better" ones were actually worse for me xD but yeh loved that aspect where you were on a mission and could meet a random person on the same mission, you would either help save their back or they'll save yours, 1 battle which was intense was when I initiated it and it lasted so long (15mins) that i didn't realise about 20 other guys caught up and joined in xD tera sort of had the same setup but if you didn't have the last kill then it wasnt marked as completed, thankfully defiance is one of the first mmo's i've been in where everything is equally shared, drops, xp, quest tasks.
Do they sell the outfits on the console versions? I would go for the ninja one xD

The micro transaction Defiance store is of course available on PS3 as well. But the pricing is, well... last time I checked was it, if I recall correctly, 7 EUR for one good looking outfit. And that's too high in my eyes - however, stuff like that will sell. I've also seen lots of store vehicles as well and I'm not surprised that they sell. SOE is selling mounts in EQ2 for ~20-25 EUR - and they are bought...
But the stuff isn't exactly equally shared. You need to do a min. amount of damage to get full XP for a kill. If you hit below this amount (varies from enemy to enemy and depends on the amount of players around) will you get reduced XP as example. If you haven't hit at all will you also not get anything from this single enemy. But yeah, if you are in a quest area together with others will you of course get your quest done - even if you reached it as last and missed stuff in this area. That's quite useful.

btw someone bought this for me! been playing all week, do console players also get events? i.e the infection one atm
I'm having problems with weaps, really dont know what stats are good when comparing :s shield wise atm ironclad / rhino, also trying to nab a purple buggy but not sure how to catch one on sale, found hidden vendors

Events are on all systems - I mean, seriously, it would be a fatal move if a system would be let out of content.
A buggy in colour purple will be rewarded as questreward in San Fran to you. Another free buggy can be earned out of the actual episodic challenges for the infection. And a black Dodge is rewarded after you are done with all racing challenges. And vehicles on sale are pretty rare, if you really want to buy one. They appear at top of the vendors in this situation, with the time left timer next to it, just like the weapons/mods.
Stats on weapons are... nonesense, kind of. You should more went after which weapon feels good for you. Example on my side: I tried different LMGs and figured, that SAW's are the best for me (medium firerate, 404 damage). Assault Rifles on the other side do I prefer 2 kinds: the ones with 202 and 303 damage (should be named Attackrifle and Attackcarbine I guess). Full automatic but still accurate.
You just need to try different named weapons and see which fit best for you. And in order to actually level up your weapon skills change out your weapons as soon as they are fully leveld (since a fully leveled weapon isn't providing gainings on your weapon skill anymore).

Funny you mention max weapon stats as I just maxed on my fav assault gun i sold everything else D: also noticed max key collect = 75, so i spent them on t3 boxes. Currently I prefer assault rifles mixed with either a sniper or a shotgun but as to which types not sure, do prefer manual sniper reload though as I go for head shots. I find rocket launcher really weak but fun to watch at events. I got my max xp reward ever today @ 12k (bonus weekend i think) What's your ego power?

I had choosen invisiblity at start. Can be pretty useful in different situations. But as higher your EGO go and as more points you use will you be able to reach all other powers as well. Am running 2 builds with invisiblity, 2 with decoy and 1 with overcharge.
Regarding rocket launchers: I had a pretty nice one (legendary rarity) pretty early in the game out of a lockbox. But they nerfed it by taking away +magazine bonuses from rocket launchers leaving my orange launcher with only 2 bonuses *sniff* But explosive weapons in general are... strange in this game. Unless you land a direct hit is the damage pretty minimum. And even with a direct hit can the damage be low. Best explosive weapons (in my opinion): Grenade Launcher with 808 damage (either explosion on impact, self triggered and after a bounce off - haven't really used any of them yet), Combat Shotguns shooting grenades (808 damage as well, automatic fire - a bit tricky to handle) and the Sawed-Off Shotgun shooting grenades (1919 damage, shooting both at once, will stick where they hit and explode after a short time - great thing, but slow reload).
And, well, you can use your favorite weapon as long as you want - but you won't increase your weapon skill with it anymore. If it is a good weapon with nice bonuses on it can you still keep it while leveling with other weapons, and use it again once you hit weapon skill level 20.
