Nintendo Wii U: Nintendo President Reveals The Range Of The Wii U Controller
[spoiler2=Article]
We already know that the Wii U’s controller can be used instead of a television screen, but what exactly is the range of the device, and can we use it in other rooms in the house? Thankfully Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has discussed these questions, though he noticeably opted not to reveal specifics with regards to the actual range of the device. Do you think you’ll use the controller in other rooms of the house, or will you mainly be playing the console on the big screen TV?
“We are not saying we can get away from the living room at all. What I’m saying is that we shall be less dependent on the home TV set; more specifically, the images and all the others are processed within the inside of the console of the Wii U, not in the controller. So, for example, you cannot just take away the controller and continue playing.”
But Iwata added that it would be possible to continue playing in another room in the house, provided the walls aren’t too thick!
“[It will have] a certain range. Also, it is possible for you to be in a separate room from the living room where the console of the Wii U will be located. However, dependent upon the thickness, for example, of the wall, we cannot tell if you will be able to smoothly play on that.”

Nintendo Wii U: Nintendo President Confirms No DVD Or Blu-ray Playback For Wii U
[spoiler2=Article]
We all knew it wouldn’t happen, and now Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has confirmed it; there will be no DVD or Blu-ray playback for Wii U. Iwata stated that there are a number of reasons why Nintendo hasn’t seen fit to include DVD or Blu-ray support with the system. Firstly, the majority of people already have DVD players, and secondly, adding DVD or Blu-ray support would mean that Nintendo would have to pay a licensing fee. Does anyone feel dissapointed by this news?
“The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn’t warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies.”

Nintendo Wii U: Nintendo President Says The Wii U Controller Will Be The TV Remote Of The Future
[spoiler2=article]
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata believes that the Wii U controller could be the television remote of the future, due to its many uses which stretch beyond traditional gaming. Clearly it will inevitably depend on adoption, but if the Wii U becomes as big as Nintendo hope it will be this could be the perfect companion next to your television remote.
“For example, there’s video chat or they may want to do web browsing while watching the screen on the big TV and managing operations with the screen in your hands.
“For the past decade or so, many attempts have been made to link the TV and the internet, but so far, nothing has been popular… [But] when you look at this controller, it’s one foot away from your eyes – it has almost the same distance of the PC and other smartphones. In other words, this device is capable of handling such activities for you to input the letters in the palm of your hands.
“In the future, if the TV and Internet can be used together, the TV will have a remote with a screen – and it will look very similar to how the Wii U controller is today,” he added. “While on one hand we are trying to reach out to the hardcore gamers, we are also trying to make something that can be used as the TV remote of the future.”
